Description:

Richard Stone Reeves (1919 - 2005) "Jamin" Oil on Board. The horse depicted in the painting is a French wonder, a trotting horse named Jamin who was not famous only because he won many races but because he loved to eat artichokes. In 1959 Jamin was scheduled to run in the inaugural International Trot at Roosevelt Raceway. And the newspapers made a real big deal about it – especially when the US Customs confiscated the bushels of ‘chokes’ that had accompanied Jamin on his flight to New York’s Idlewild Airport (now JFK). After reading of the “cruelty” of the Customs Agents, hundreds of race fans delivered artichokes to the Raceway for Jamin’s eating pleasure. Jamin held on to win in front of a crowd of 48,000 spectators, with the Italian horse Tornese in second by half a length and betting favorite Trader Horn, an American entry, in third, 2¼ lengths out of second. Jamin ran the mile-and-a-half in 3:08.6. Known as a portrait painter of horses, Richard Reeves was born in Manhattan, New York and settled in Greenport after having a studio for many years in Oldwick, New Jersey. From there he traveled widely to depict his subject matter. Horse-portrait commissions came from many prestigious horse owners such as Paul Mellon, W. Averill Harriman, Allaire duPont, Aga Khan and Harry Guggenheim., and subjects included race- winners Seattle Slew, Secretariat, Buckpasser and Spectacular Bid.
