Description:

Richard Stone Reeves (1919 - 2005) "April Star" Oil on Canvas Laid to Board. Known as a portrait painter of horses, Richard Reeves was born in Manhattan, New York and settled in Greenport after having a studio for many years in Oldwick, New Jersey. From there he traveled widely to depict his subject matter. Horse-portrait commissions came from many prestigious horse owners such as Paul Mellon, W. Averill Harriman, Allaire duPont, Aga Khan and Harry Guggenheim., and subjects included race- winners Seattle Slew, Secretariat, Buckpasser and Spectacular Bid. Richard Reeves earned a B.A. in art in 1941 from Syracuse University and served in naval intelligence in China during World War II. while on duty as a naval intelligence officer (lieutenant) with the Fourteenth Air Force, that he met the president of Roosevelt Raceway, Robert G. Johnson, who was also with naval intelligence as a commanding officer. They spent many hours discussing horses and racetracks and agreed to look each other up after the war. After the war, Johnson contacted Reeves and linked him to further subjects for his paintings. This painting is inscribed on the lower left corner "To Robert G. Johnson Xmas 1947." April Star, from every imaginable viewpoint, is a remarkable gelding, certainly one of superior attainments, overcoming as he did one of the severest imaginable handicaps a harness horse can possibly encounter, and he is certainly entitled to the many tributes paid him. His life is comparable in many ways with the history of some of our most notable Americans, befriended and nursed back to health when a helpless youngster, he not only attained great heights as a racing proposition, and provided an immensurable amount of pleasure to thousands of sport loving people, but he likewise repaid his breeder/owner, Roy L. Craig, Urbana, O., most substantially in a financial way, and provided him satisfaction to a degree impossible to compute. One can draw numerous morals from his life, one being, "It pays to be kind and considerate of animals as well as humans. April Star is buried in the infield at the track at the Champaign County Fairgrounds.
