Description:

WWII US M3 Fighting Knife with Scabbard. Scabbard marked USM8A1 BM Co The M4 bayonet was introduced in 1944 for use with the M1 carbine. It was built on the M3 fighting knife. The M4 bayonet, like the M3 fighting knife that preceded it, was designed for rapid production using a minimum of strategic metals and machine processes, it used a relatively narrow 6.75-inch bayonet-style spear-point blade with a sharpened 3.5-inch secondary edge. The blade was made of carbon steel, and was either blued or parkerized. Production of the grooved leather handle was later simplified by forming the grip of stacked leather washers that were shaped by turning on a lathe, then polished and lacquered. The steel crossguard had a bayonet muzzle ring and the bayonet fastener is on the pommel. Later models used a black molded plastic handle. The basic design would be used for the later M5, M6 and M7 bayonets. Bayonet-knife for use on the caliber .30 U.S. Carbine M1. The M4 bayonet was also used on the selective-fire M2 Carbine which was developed post-War. As first fielded, the M1 Carbine did not accept a bayonet. Beginning in June 1944, the front band included a bayonet lug. Most M1 carbines were subsequently retrofitted with the bayonet-lug front band. Includes a US M8A1 BM Co. Fiberglass scabbard. The main body was Painted green. The throat piece was enforced with a metal fitting. It is here that most of the markings are found. A canvas attachment was secured near the throat piece. This device provided the means by which the knife could be secured to a utility belt or another surface. A black metal hook was often secured at the end of the canvas strap. The tip of the scabbard has a hole where the leg tie would pass through. Keywords: Militaria; Ref: BD1000
