Description:

Vintage Ornate Silver Thai Thepanom Repousse Bowl. The current lot is comprised of an elegant silver container, decorated with repousse motifs of traditional South Asian motives. The sides of the bowl are remarkably embossed with the Thepphanom or Thephanom sat on the blossoming lotus flower, which is intimately linked with Buddhism. A Thai term referring to the depiction in paintings or traditional Thai patterns of a Deva performing the Añjali Mudrā hand meaning reverence to self-sealing or (refers to one’s true self and respect). The Thepanom is thought to have first come to earth when Buddha reached enlightenment, its image became associated as Buddha's protector, guardian of religious temples, and ritual artifacts. The figure sits in a blossoming lotus flower is surrounded by the beautiful and exquisite detail of scrolling kranok flames. Originally the royal courts were the primary consumer of gold and silver artifacts. However, from the sixteenth century onwards nobility began to reward their followers or foreign visitors, which they often gave gifts of silver, such as the present box, which may have served as a Paan or Betel box. Indeed. The presence of our Buddhist imaginary suggests this might have been a ritual object donated to a Buddhist temple by a noble family. This bowl has no visible markings, but test as silver.
