Description:

The X-Wing has been a crown jewel of movie miniatures since its first appearance onscreen. It was designed by legendary artist Colin Cantwell, and made by the amazing Model Makers at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) for the 1977 movie, STAR WARS. There would be three levels of X-Wing models made for Star Wars in 1977;.. the HERO, the High Quality PYRO, and the Low Quality PYRO for those repetitive attempted exploding shots. One of the high quality Pyro X-Wings, though pieced to gether from a few different screen used Pyro X-Wings, recently sold at Auction in 2022 for over $2.3 million U.S. dollars. The HERO X-Wings are quite a bit different from their PYRO counterparts. The HERO X-Wing has a slightly different shape, and had studio mounting points all over it for filming purposes. Decades after Star Wars in 1977, Artists Steve Dymszo and Jason Eaton were able to visit the Lucasfilm Archives in Northern California, and photograph a few of the remaining original filming models stored there. One of them was the 1977 HERO Model of Red 3. They surveyed the model extensively, taking exact measurements of it in order to recreate this beloved HERO model. From there, those photos and measurements ended up in the hands of Mike Salzo, who had already been working with Pyro model parts of the Studio Scale X-Wing. Mike examined the photos in great detail, and created the first HERO studio scale X-Wing parts ever created with accuracy. The HERO X-Wing in this Auction is one of those made from the Mike Salzo accurate parts. This X-Wing, is one of six HERO X-Wings offered in this Auction that were replicated fully to match the original filming models from 1977. Being that the original Hero Models had met with destructive fates, with one Hero X-Wing remaining in the Lucasfilm Archives, and another Hero X-Wing having made its way into a Collection, ILM’s original photos of the filming models from 1977 were used to make certain that the Hero X-Wings in the Kuhn Global Collection looked correct in every way in both their color and markings. These HERO X-Wing Replicas were the first set in the world to replicate all six studio model X-Wings used in 1977, and shown on public display together. The are differences between the original HERO X-Wings used for filming, and the six Hero Replicas being offered in this Auction. There is only a single mounting point on each Replica rather than several that were placed on the originals for filming purposes. Also, the pilot figure in these replicas resemble each Actor who played the character piloting the specific X-Wing replicated, as identified with their helmet artwork.. The original models used a race car driver in the cockpit of every X-Wing. We also added the correct Droid to sit behind the pilot, making each the Droid that was behind the Actor in the 1977 movie. The originals used mostly R2-D2 for that spot. Plus, we added cockpit glass. The originals removed their glass as it became an issue with reflection during being photographed, or while filming the model. This Studio Scale HERO X-Wing Replica is RED 1 (Red Leader). It was masterfully replicated by famed artist R.L. Bleecker. It is painted in white with red markings, a blue/gray canopy, and several panel and line markings made in a few different colors. It matches the original filming model. The wings show the single stripe as an indication of Red 1, yet the defining marking that best tells the identification of this X-Wing is the explosive starburst burn marking on its main hull, in front of the canopy. This is best highlighted by the clean white panel, which must have been replaced just before the Battle of Yavin, where Red Leader was destroyed. The Pilot figure has the correct markings on its helmet, and the Droid for Red Leader is a red R5 unit with black and white lines highlighting the different areas upon it. It has been weathered with black charcoal, black and rust paints, as well as chalk to obtain that battle-torn look that makes this great X-Wing as realistic to the original as possible. It is mounted on top of an adjustable Panavise mount via a 1/4-20 thread. The Panavise is connected to a wooden base. It is truly beautiful. The other five studio-scale X-Wing HERO Replicas are also offered in this Auction. They always look marvelous on their own, and even more impressive together. Keywords: Collectible; Ref: BD1831
