Description:

Rare! Zolotas 18K Yellow Gold Greek Revival Necklace from their masterpiece collection. Stamped 750 Z. Zolotas is a Greek jewelry house that has been in business since the late 1800s. Many of the firm's pieces, both antique and contemporary, reflect classical cultures in their designs. Efthimios Zolotas founded his namesake business in Athens, Greece, around 1895. In addition to making jewelry with ancient themes, including Mycenaean, Hellenic, and Byzantine designs, Zolotas was known for crafting jewels for the Greek royal family, including tiaras and jewelry worn at King George V's coronation in England in 1911. Efthimios's son, Xenofon Zolotas—a noted businessman who eventually became Prime Minister of Greece—expanded the brand during the 1950s. The relationship with influential customers continued during this period. By the 1960s, more celebrities and noble figures discovered the beauty of Zolotas' historical designs made in cooperation with archaeological museums located in Greece. Notable clients included Maria Callas, Aristotle Onassis, and Elizabeth Taylor. The Zolotas workshop moved in the 1970s to its current location in Athens and established a boutique in Paris. The firm also held several partnerships with designers and sculptors during this era, including Paloma Picasso, Claude Lalanne, and Alekos Fasianos. In one of these collaborations, sculptor Takis designed pieces with pearls that change position according to the wearer's body temperature. Georges Papalexis joined Zolotas as artistic director in 2009. He has revived many of the company's famous historical styles and introduced new collections in various gold colors, including gray and pink, combined with diamonds. Approx.
