Lot 1015
RARE!! Thomas Moran (1837 - 1926) "Krakatoa in Eruption" Original Oil on Board. This original work was published as part of a series of illustrations by Thomas Moran for an article titled: Volcanoes and Earthquakes by Mrs. Charles F. Hartt, in St. Nicholas Magazine Vol. XIX No. 12 (October 1892) on page 891. This image depicts the scene that took place during the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883. At the time clouds of white, grey, and black ashes poured out of the volcano and rose to thousands of feet, engulfing the surrounding area in complete darkness with thick air and falling ash. The most notable eruptions of Krakatoa culminated in a series of massive explosions over 26–27 August 1883, which were among the most violent volcanic events in recorded history. Eruptions in the area since 1927 have built a new island at the same location, named Anak Krakatau (which is Indonesian for "Child of Krakatoa"). Periodic eruptions have continued since, with recent eruptions in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, and a major collapse in 2018. Thomas Moran was a key figure in the American landscape tradition. He created colorful and highly atmospheric paintings that captured the beauty and grandeur of the scenery around him. Although Moran was a self-taught artist, he received much encouragement and advice from the Philadelphia-based painter James Hamilton, who introduced him to the work of the popular English landscape and marine painter, Joseph Mallord William Turner. His first opportunity to travel in the West came when he joined a Geological Survey Expedition to the Yellowstone territory in 1871. On this trip he befriended William Henry Jackson, the pioneer photographer, and through Jackson's photographs and Moran's paintings of the Yellowstone area, Congress was influenced to declare it a national park. After the Yellowstone trip, Moran's career as an expedition artist and painter blossomed. He is credited as a great documentary painter, and would go on expeditions all over the world to study and depict his surroundings. This lot will include an issue of St Nicholas Magazine Volume XIX No. 12 October 1892, and part 1, and 2 hardcover copy of St. Nicholas Magazine Volume XIX (Six Months) November 1891- October 1892.
