Description:

Rare Circa 1785 British Waters Patent Blunderbuss Flintlock Pistol with Spring Bayonet. This was the first Blunderbuss pistol with a spring-loaded bayonet patented by John Waters on 8th March 1781 under Patent No. 1824. This rare antique pistol has a belled two-stage brass barrel fitted with a spring bayonet beneath and mounted with a rib and two ramrod pipes offset to the left. The action is beautifully engraved around the border and has an elegant script signed "WATERS & CO." on the right and "PATENT NO. 738" on the left, border engraved thumb piece safety-catch. The engraved trigger-guard has a second trigger acting as the bayonet release. The gorgeous flat-sided fine dark walnut butt accents the brass barrel nicely. This rare pistol appears to have the extremely scarce original horn tipped ramrod, the ramrod is usually replaced or missing, and to have the original period correct ramrod is almost unheard of. Two Tower private proof marks on the bottom of the barrel right in front of the trigger guard. The spring bayonet itself is marked THO.GILL for Thomas Gill a large-edged weapon manufacturer to the British Crown. Working Order: Firearm has not been Tested; Background Check: Not Required; Keywords: Firearms, Guns, Antique Weapons; REF: BD1412

  • Medium: Brass, Wood, Steel
  • Circa: 18th Century
  • Notes: John Waters was granted British Patent No. 1824 on 9 March 1781 for attaching bayonets to pistols, and is generally credited with the invention of the spring bayonet
  • Condition: This pistol is in fine condition, for being over 200 years old, with minimal signs of wear commensurate with age. The engraving and script are still visible. The bore is clean with no pitting, rust, or damage. When light is applied down the barrel it is visible through the hole in the pan. The wood handle has a nice dark patina with pressure dents and light scratching normally for a gun of this age. Please see pictures for details of this extremely rare and unique piece of history.
