Description:

Rare Antique U.S. Johnson Contract Model 1842 Percussion Pistol. This pre-Civil War U.S. made single shot, smoothbore pistol is a rare specimen of the Model 1842 percussion pistol produced by Ira N. Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. Ira Johnson received a contract from the U.S. Ordnance Dept in March 1851 to produce 10,000 M1842 pistols. Johnson was a partner in the firm of H. Aston & Co when he resigned to start his own company to manufacture single shot pistols. Johnson delivered pistols that were identical to Aston’s arms save for the markings on the plate. Johnson’s pistols are stamped on the lockplate forward of the rounded hammer with “US / I. N. JOHNSON” and to the rear with a three-line mark “MIDDTN / CONN / 1854”. The .54 caliber, smoothbore muzzleloading pistol is a 14” long sidearm fitted with an 8.5” round barrel. Pistol has brass furniture including a single barrel band, triggerguard, pommel, backstrap and the front blade sight. Piece exhibits proof marks of “U.S. / JCB / small P (very thin) stamped on the upper barrel at the breech. The left rear flat is marked "STEEL B". The brass parts like the left side of the barrel strap, trigger guard, and lower tang are all marked with a small "B". Approximately 10,000 were produced from 1853 to 1855.
