Description:

RARE! Antique Carved Jacob Dickert Percussion Kentucky Rifle. This rifle, crafted by a prominent American gunsmith Jacob Dickert, represents a piece of American history from the time of American Independence. Jacob Dickert was born in 1740 in Maintz, Germany and his family emigrated to America in 1748, finally settling in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1756. Dickert had a shop on North Queen Street in Lancaster and was listed as a gunsmith in tax records in 1770, 1772, and 1776. He opened a rifle barrel boring factory with John Henry in 1774 on a lot in Manheim Township. Jacob Dickert later made contract rifles with James Gill for the U.S. government. This rifle probably dates from between 1790 and 1810. Octagonal barrel marked "J. Dickert" on top flat in script with a faint maker's mark in a cartouche. Notched rear sight and replaced brass front sight. Flat lockplate with a single trigger. Brass furniture includes a typical Lancaster-style sideplate with beveled edges, patchbox with a classic Lancaster daisy finial and engraved with deeply engraved designs, and a moon above the cheekpiece. Un-engraved silver oval wrist escutcheon. Made by an early Lancaster gunsmith who also made rifles that were used during the American Revolutionary War. Rifles signed by Dickert are scarcely encountered. Caliber/ Gauge: .50 cal; Working Order: Firearm has not been tested; Background Check: FFL Not Required; Keywords: Firearms, Guns; Ref: BD3162

  • Notes:
  • Jacob Dickert (born January 9, 1740 near Mainz, Electorate/Archbishopric of Mainz, Holy Roman Empire; died February 27, 1822 in Lancaster, PA) was a leading gunsmith in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the center of early American rifle-making throughout the eighteenth century. Over his long career, which extended from the French and Indian War to the War of 1812, Dickert helped transform Lancaster’s scattered, independent, small-scale gunmakers into a coordinated industry that could fulfill enormous government contracts and petition Congress for trade protection. Dickert trained his grandsons, Jacob Dickert Gill (1788-1850) and Benjamin Gill (1790-1860), who also became rifle-makers. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the name Dickert that had been engraved on rifle barrels — commonly distorted in popular usage into “Deckard” — had become synonymous with the longrifle itself.
  • Condition:
  • This rifle is in poor condition, but it has great potential for restoration as this rifle is a piece of American History. Originally a flintlock, it has been crudely converted to percussion. The end of the barrel has a round ball plugged at the end of the bore. The ramrod appears to be a replacement; it is broken and missing half of its length. The stock is in rough shape and shows signs of damage and loss. Additionally, the rifle is missing screws in various places. Please review the photos carefully for a complete view of its condition and details.
