Description:

Rare Vintage Bitossi Aldo Londi Mid Century Modern Genovese Matte Black with Blue and Green Glazed Ceramic Bull Sculpture. A rare Bitossi mid-century bull with a modernist geometric design, mainly matte black glaze with accents of green, blue and turquoise, from the series known as Genovese, designed by Aldo Londi, made in Italy. The bull is marked on the underside "4527 Italy". For centuries, the Bitossi family has had potters, kiln workers, sculptors, and painters among its members. The family has made quality ceramics in the Montelupo Fiorentina region since 1871. Fifty years later, in 1921, Guido Bitossi established the Maioliche Artistiche Guido Bitossi pottery factory. With the arrival of art director Aldo Londi in 1946 and long-lasting collaboration with renowned architect Ettore Sottsass, Bitossi entered a new phase that would change the world of Italian ceramics forever. An official designation as a Historical Italian Company in 2014 cemented Bitossi’s reputation as a historic brand. Loved by architects and interior designers worldwide, Bitossi pottery products are a work of art and sought-after items for art and mid century modern collectors. Aldo Londi(1911-2003) was a painter, sculptor and primarily ceramist. He created objects that are still part of the history of Italian ceramics. He was born in Montelupo Fiorentino. At the age of eleven he started working for Fanciullacci’s manufacturing, where he could learn the traditional techniques in making pottery. After the war, Londi kept on his work and became Art Director of the famous Bitossi family ceramics studio in Montelupo. By Londi’s new style, Bitossi production had a sudden transformation. The style of Londi promoted the production of new high quality objects realized by handcraft methods. For Bitossi he designed his most famous lines of pottery such as ‘Rimini blue’, ‘Mondrian’, ‘Lobster’, ‘Sivilla’ and ‘Etrusca’. This lines were distributed widely in the United States by Raymor Company, which was one of the most influential importers and distributers of modern decorative arts during the middle of the twentieth century.
