Rolex 6238: The Pre-Daytona That Inspired a Legend. When we talk about the Rolex Daytona, we're talking about an absolute icon, the most famous and coveted chronograph in the world. But before the legend was born, there was a model that anticipated its spirit, design, and philosophy: the Rolex Chronograph ref. 6238, for many one of the most elegant and underrated vintage chronographs from the crowned Maison. For me, it's the true and only Pre-Daytona. While the term Pre-Daytona is often used to describe all Rolex chronographs prior to the ref. 6239 (the first to bear the Daytona name), the ref. 6238 represents a watershed moment: the link between the classic chronographs of the 1950s and the modern Daytona of the 1960s. Introduced in 1963 and produced until 1967, it was made in three variants: steel, 14K gold, and 18K gold. It was offered with at least 14 dial variations, many of which were derived from previous models in the very early production runs. But what makes it unique is that it is the last Rolex chronograph with a tachymeter scale printed on the dial, and also the last to simply bear the word "Chronograph," without the Daytona name. The Rolex 727 movement is a manual-wind, chronograph movement used in Rolex Daytona watches from about 1969 to 1987. It is a refined version of the Valjoux 72 caliber and is known for its upgraded frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (vph), which made it more accurate than previous models. The 727 was the last manual-wind movement in the Daytona before the model transitioned to automatic movements in 1988. Approx.
