Lot 1020A
Rare Frederic Remington "The Scalp" Cast #27 Roman Bronze Works Sculpture Circa 1920s! Frederic Sackrider Remington (1861 - 1909) "The Scalp" Bronze Sculpture. Inscribed Frederic Remington with the ROMAN BRONZE WORKS N.Y. foundry mark and numbered 27 beneath the base. The rope on the horse is loose and braided as all early casts are (later casts had soldered ropes that did not move). The base is a rocky surface which is also indicative of early models, and was never mounted to a marble or other surface which later casts are.
Originally titled The Triumph, Remington's fourth bronze was given the more descriptive moniker The Scalp after 1900, when the artist transferred the model to Roman Bronze Works from the Henry-Bonnard foundry, which used the sand casting method. Roman Bronze Works was the first foundry to employ the lost wax process in the United States and Remington was one of the first American sculptors to take advantage of this technique. The Scalp's drama is created by the strong lines of the horse's stance, three of its legs fixed firmly to the base, the other flexed forward in a high-stepping gait. The bold gesture of the Sioux, his arm raised in a victorious display, is matched by his facial expression, frozen in a triumphant howl.
This sculpture was exhibited in the first “Masters Art Show” in Dubai, for the Royal Family in 2006, and included over 80 artworks across time and nationality including Bernini, Brueghel, Van Gogh and Warhol, and Remington. The show was put together by Tod Michael Volpe, ACA Galleries, Robert Butters, head of creative at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Company. Philip Schiavo (President of Roman Bronze Works) was asked to examine the sculpture by the insurance company (Huntington Block) prior to the show and completed his evaluation in October, 2005. Roman Bronze Works confirmed the work of Frederic Remington with early numbers having been cast during the 1920s and 1930s. (copy of letter in pictures) Grosso Art Packers handled the task of moving, packing, and shipping the sculpture to Dubai.
