- Notes: Judy Geib has a natural and instinctive talent for all kinds of crafts ranging from embroidery and knitting, to pottery and stone carving, to sculpture and painting. Originally from Reading, PA, she grew up surrounded by paint samples from her father’s business and his experimental art, and otherwise taught herself how to make all sorts of things. Having lived in Brazil for two years in high school and exposed to the vibrant culture there, Judy was also exposed to gems and mineral specimens and the opportunity to travel–all over Brazil and South America and beyond. From there she returned to Pennsylvania to study art and was fortunate to take part in a visiting artist program that included artists such as Philip Glass, John Cage, Bill T. Jones and many other important figures. After graduating from college she moved to New York. Making paintings and objects for about 20 years while having jobs in architecture and book design, her studio work unexpectedly turned into jewelry. When she started making jewelry, she realized she had finally found what loved to do. Judy learned the basics of silver jewelry making in high school art class and with that knowledge, along with a plumber’s torch and straightforward how-to jewelry book, she had the information she needed to make whatever she wanted to make. In 2002 Barneys New York took her first collection of twelve pieces, and has been showing work exclusively there ever since. Judy is a true bench jeweler, working alongside a very skilled and adventurous craftsman, Nikolle (Nick) Radi, who knows the full range of jewelry making techniques. Inspired by many things like sea invertebrate, architecture, politics, corn, embroidery, and other crafts, she doesn’t call herself a jewelry designer in the conventional sense, because a piece usually takes its shape as it is being hand made. In Judy’s words she would call it “process design” in contrast to “product design.” Taking great pleasure with her work and the adventure of buying stones at the source–in Minas Gerais, Brazil (aquamarines, pink and green tourmalines), and in Bogota, Columbia (emeralds)–Judy uses natural (untreated, unheated, unirradiated) stones that follow a direct path from miner to cutter for her jewelry. In addition to taking pride in making everything by hand and in the integrity of the materials she uses–Judy is conscientious of using the gold silver and platinum as responsibly as possible, while being alert to the inherent contradiction between using those materials and their effect on the environment.
