Lot of Laurie Johnston (1914-2001) NY Times Reporter Ephemera Lot. Includes 1972 letter from the White House various newspaper articles written by Laurie Johnston, fan mail addressed to her at the NY Times office, copies of the her responses to the letters, original typed first drafts of stories/articles that would later on get printed in the NY Times Newspaper and her 1984 Campaign Press Pass and 1984 NYPD Working Press Pass. Also includes photographs and caricatures drawings dated 1953 in Mexico of Laurie and her husband who also served as a WW2 Correspondent and fellow journalist. Most items are written on by Laurie with notes and edits. Laurie Johnston worked as a columnist, reporter and editor for The Times, covering neighborhoods, education and the courts, among other subjects. Her career spanned over six decades. Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism awarded her the Meyer Berger Award for distinguished reporting in 1980, citing her ''consistently warm and perceptive glimpses of the little and large dramas of New York.'' was born in Fort Collins, Colo., and grew up in Albany, Ore. She studied English and journalism at the University of Oregon. By her sophomore year, the student once referred to by Old Oregon as the “brainstorm of the journalism shack” was honored by Sigma Delta Chi, a men’s journalism honorary, for her scholastic merits. After graduating she worked at several West Coast newspapers. During World War II she covered the Pacific from Pearl Harbor and was one of the few women accredited to report on both the Army and the Navy. In 1939 she married Richard W. Johnston, who was also a war correspondent and who eventually became the executive editor of Sports Illustrated. In 1953 she wrote ''Elizabeth Enters: The Story of a Queen'' (Scribners), a biography for which Mr. Johnston served as the picture editor. In 1946 Ms. Johnston joined Newsweek's international news department, where she stayed until joining The Times in 1949. At The Times, she would become known for the humanity and wit of her writing, covering subjects as diverse as labor strife at the Metropolitan Opera, president Nixon’s impeachment, and the early 1980s roller-skating craze in Central Park. She retired in 1984 and established the Richard W. Johnston Lecture Series at the SOJC in honor of her late husband and fellow Hall of Achievement member. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died in her Honolulu home in 2001. Keywords: Vintage, Ephemera; Ref: BD1115
