Lot 2773
OWN A PIECE OF VINTAGE TAHOE GAMBLING HISTORY! Alfred Dupont (1904 - 1982) Shootout At The Old State Line Oil on Linen Laid To Board. Depicts an image of two outlaws in a chaotic scene on horseback firing their guns behind them as they ride away from an establishment called The Old State Line. Note this painting has been trimmed at one time and part of the painting where the artist hand signed was removed. This painting is however consistent with the previous lots 2271, 2272 so we can firmly state that this is the work of Alfred Du Pont. This mural is considered vintage "Wild West" or "Western Frontier Style" art and were considered were idyllic representations of the west. This has led to the expression of the “imagined West.” and creates a nostalgic image of western landscape that many chalk up to children’s games such as cowboys going on adventures and heroic duels in front of town saloons. This mural was painted on linen which was mounted on plywood. Artist: Alfred Dupont Title: Shootout At The Old State Medium: Oil on Linen Signature Type: Unsigned Keywords: Native American, Indian Artwork, Art; Ref: BD1333
- Provenance: These murals have remained in the same succession of family ownership since purchase of the Stateline Country Club in Tahoe
- Dimensions: 38x72 in.
- Exhibited: Alfred Du Pont was a noted California Muralist Alfred Du Pont (Dupont) ran away from home as a teenager and rode the rails to San Francisco. He studied art at California School of Fine Arts (CSFA), UC and the Bay Area's pre-eminent fine arts school the California College of Arts and Crafts. He was an active muralist in the 1930s where he was commission to paint murals in the Hearst Castle including the Old Testament on the ceiling of the celestial suite as well as other public places including the Mining Building at the 1939 Golden Gate Exposition. During WWII he painted portraits of Admirals Nimitz and Halsey. While serving in the Navy he was the recipient of 2 Purple Hearts from injuries in Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Okinawa. Nevada legalized gambling in 1931 and popular clubs and casinos soon became popular destinations for tourists and entertainers alike. One of the most popular and successful venues was the Stateline Country Club which was purchased from Nick Abelman by Nick and Eddie Sahati for $350,000 at a meeting in 1945 in San Francisco at the St. Francis Hotel. It was rumored that the “meeting” was actually a poker game where the debt was settled through the purchase of the property. Alfred Du Pont was commission to make a series of western themed murals for the Stateline Country Club in Tahoe where these exact murals resided. It is unknown the exact date these murals were commissioned but we believe them to be dated to the 1930’s when Alfred Du Pont was active in the area and Stateline Country Club embraced the Western and Native American themed décor. Entertainers such as Lena Horne, Sons of the Pioneers (one of the United States' earliest Western singing groups), and the Ink Spots were regular performers at the club. The murals were believed to be removed when Nick Sahati sold the Stateline Country Club to Bill Harrah where Harrah’s Lake Tahoe now sits.
- Medium: Oil on Linen
- Circa: 1930S
- Notes: The additional vintage pictures of Stateline Country Club included in the listing are digital reference only and not part of the lot being sold.
- Condition: This piece is in great condition, with signs of minor wear commensurate with age. Note this painting has been professionally cleaned and conserved to return the work to its original vibrant colors. The professional conservator was careful to maintain the vintage western look. Also the linen was originally mounted to the plywood and was mounted to the walls with a frame that was attached to the walls. We do not recommend attempting to remove the linen from the wood. A frame could be installed with appropriate hanging hardware or these could be mounted to the wall as they were. Please see photos for details.
