Description:

1978 Battlestar Galactica - Battlestar PACIFICA 1/2 Studio Scale at 1:1920 Scale. Created by the famed artists at John Dykstra's APOGEE for the 1978 series, and 1979 movie "Battlestar Galactica", these 1/2 studio scale parts were made by industry artist Mike Salzo. He utilized Apogee photos and measurements of the original 6-foot studio filming model used in 1978. This masterpiece was then built by famed industry model maker Dan Grumeretz. The concept of a Battlestar was created for the story that Glen Larsen had developed in which there were twelve worlds, each being its own Colony. For each Colony there was a Battlestar to protect it, thus making a combined Fleet of twelve Battlestars. In the filming of the series, Battlestar Galactica, there would be only one Battlestar studio model built to be filmed. Therefore, if filming a different Battlestar for a scene, all Apogee would do is simply switch the nameplate on the model. The original filming model of the Battlestar Galactica is 6 feet in length. The size of the physical Battlestar (if it were real), was stated by effects artist John Dykstra and series creator Glen Larsen as being 1 nautical mile in length (6,080 Feet). It was also stated that the 6-foot studio scale Battlestar model is 1/960 scale, which doesn’t fit the 6,080 feet that Glen Larsen suggested for a full-sized Battlestar. Nevertheless, the model weighed 60 pounds and was built from various parts from hundreds of cannibalized plastic model kits, such as those from mini-scaled battleships, land vehicles, and planes from the World War II era. It was stated at some time that "the crew had the feeling that, if it hadn't been for World War II, Galactica (the model) would not have been possible". Needless to say, many model kits were utilized to make the Galactica studio model. What is wonderful about the use of military kits is that they each were made in specific scales. All of the original kits have been identified by people in the art form utilizing the photos that Kurt Kuhn released of the Battlestar Galactica Studio Model in 2008 so everyone may use them, also declaring them to be public domain. Thus, when artist Mike Salzo reduced the measurements by half and built the body of the Battlestar, all he needed to do was obtain the correct kit parts that were half the size of the originals. I state “all he had to do”, though, in reality, it is quite a task that Mike made happen. The great thing about military models is that they are made in many scales. Offered here today are four Battlestars from Mike Salzo’s great efforts. As mentioned previously, the Story states that there are twelve Colonies, and suggests that there are twelve Battlestars. In the opening scene of Battlestar Galactica Episode 1, “Saga of a Star World, Part 1”, we are able to briefly view four Battlestars in formation, with the suggestion later that there were five present. They were all together to meet with a Cylon Delegation for Peace. The four Battlestars we see are the Galactica, the Atlantia, the Pacifica, and the Acropolis. They are the reason for our replication of them for display. As stated previously, the original studio model only had to change the nameplate in order to be seen as a different Battlestar. The issue then is that every Battlestar looks the same, and can only be identified by the nameplate. I called upon famed Industry Artist Dan Grumeretz to build what Mike had created parts for. We decided at that time that there would likely be another way of identification being that there are no identifying numbers on their hulls that could be seen at a distance, likened to today’s Aircraft Carriers. The Galactica used Red as its color for the striping along it landing pods, along the edge of the head of the Battlestar, as a large strip going around the landing bay itself, a circular stripe on the top dome, and finally five stripes on each side of the engine that are parts rectangular in shape. We felt that this would identify a Battlestar from a distance if it were real, and if we were viewing it from any distance. We gave the other three Battlestars different colors other than the Red color that Galactica has as its identification. The Battlestar PACIFICA is identified with its BLUE stripes and proper nameplate. This scaled replica of the Battlestar Pacifica, as well as the Battlestar Acropolis, have a few extra details that our offered Battlestar’s Atlantia and Galactica do not have placed upon them. Just behind the head of these massive models, on what is considered to be the neck area, are gun emplacements. One in the center (with a sensor dish on top of it), and also on the Starboard side there are a few extra single guns and a railing. These details were on the original studio model that had come off at some point, and photos were found showing them once more. This amazing model sits beautifully at its full length of 38.5 inches, showing all of the parts and tubes that are on it. The head is beautiful, with side trenches that are lit with fiber optics for scale. The bridge looks like the original, with many fiber optic lights giving a great perspective of the Battlestars massive demeanor. The pod bays on each side are held strongly by its huge arms, and the bays are lined with Colonial Viper Launch Tubes. At the rear of each pod is the Landing Bay, where one may peer inside to view the same backlit slide made half scale that was used in the original studio model, which shows the interior of the full length of the Bay, with Colonial Vipers parked within it. There are beautiful warm fiber optics all over this piece, bringing it to life in the proper scale. The engines are fully lit, with the proper honeycomb pattern within the engine that was used in the original studio model. Beneath all of the added parts, is an amazingly beautiful armored hull, showing great detail. Even the pods on each side have the “penciled in” paneling which can be seen around the front of them, where the nameplate is. There is no finer half-studio-scale replica in the world.
