Description:

Kit Schweitzer (1944-2019) "Zuni Big Horn Kachina" Watercolor on Paper. After serving as a park ranger at Navajo National Monument for several seasons, Kit Schweitzer became a full-time professional sculptor and second-generation Arizona artist. He received his MFA in ceramics from Arizona State University in 1971 and a BA in anthropology from the University of Arizona in 1966. His work was shown widely in numerous galleries and held in public and private collections across the country. For his own use and to share with friends, he built boats, telescopes, and stringed musical instruments (harps, guitars, banjos, and more). Those close to him fondly recall his strong musical talents. Kit’s architectural acumen showed in the geodesic domes and straw bale buildings he constructed. He explored many media and forms, including metalwork, woodwork, painting, printmaking, jewelry, pottery, leatherworking, papermaking, hat-making, and chainmail construction. One of his “goals” was to make one of everything, and he often expressed interest in making “antiques from the future.” His final series of work, completed in 2008, was titled “Primal Forms,” and involved computer-aided design and a computer-driven router table, with hand-formed wooden and metal constructions.
