Description:

Jose Vela Zanetti (1913 - 1999) "Cabeza De Mujer" Oil on Canvas. José Vela Zanetti is one of the most meaningful Spanish artists of the 20th Century. A native of Burgos in northern Spain, Zanetti is also known as a representative of 'Muralismo', a special type of wall painting. He completed his art studies in Madrid with his teacher, José Ramon Zaragoza. An educational journey brought him to Italy in 1933 thanks to obtaining a scholarship from the Diputación, a stay that marked him deeply after studying the works of the great Italian masters. In 1951 with a Guggenheim fellowship, Zanetti traveled to New York, where he made the preparatory sketches for one of his masterpieces: the United Nations Headquarters Mural. He would also participate in an exhibition "12 Spanish Artists" organized by the Schaeffer Gallery in New York, where he appeared alongside other artists such as Picasso, Juan Gris and Miró. In 1960 after his return to Spain, he began to compose his famous peasant scenes, without abandoning the Latin American attributes inherited from the great Mexican muralists. In 1997, the Vela Zanetti Foundation opened in Leon, exhibiting 50 of his paintings and a mural.
