  • Notes:
  • ‘Trooper on the Plains’ depicts a cowboy on horseback with pistol & sword, bronze casting with fine detail & patina. Trooper of the Plains By Remington 1909 In late 1908 Remington began his twenty-first bronze subject, Trooper of the Plains, as homage to the mounted soldier of the 1860s. The soldier’s uniform, including the black felt cap and the Jefferson boots, was made to conform to the military fashion of the Civil War years. Typically for Remington, the soldier’s pose is intended to be historically accurate. According to historians, during a cavalry attack it was standard army procedure for soldiers to ride hard toward the Indians’ horse and livestock herds, firing their guns in the air in an attempt to stampede them away from the enemy’s camp. Remington completed the clay model in November 1908, and by the second week of the month the plaster version had been completed in the artist’s studio and sent to the Roman Bronze Works foundry. On November 11, Remington noted in his diary: “Went over to Greenpoint and worked all day completing Trooper. [A] very fine figure.. Remington paid extremely close attention to the post-Civil War military fashion and hardware, which was one of his favorite subjects. Captured in a full gallop, Remington's statue Trooper of the Plains storms briskly through the wild country. The horse, caught in mid-flight over sagebrush, is an accomplishment of artistic mastery, as all four legs are rendered off the ground. With a yank of the reins and a pistol pointed across his torso, The Trooper of the Plains was a blatant try by Remington, at recapturing the title as the art historian of the Indian-fighting army. This was a title that Remington had held for many years. In 1903 Remington got into a controversy with a painter he didn’t care for. The controversy was over accuracy and not artistry. Five years later he was still smarting over it.In this particular piece he paid extremely close attention to the post-Civil War military fashion and hardware, which was one of his favorite subjects to sketch. In this rendition a similarity can be seen that is also present in the Cheyenne. The horses hooves are in midair this time however, instead of a buffalo hide supporting the bulk of the mass; its weight is supported by sagebrush.
