Description:

Elsa Ledezma Mata Ortiz Red Clay Pottery Vase. Polished red clay pottery vase with black geometric design bands. Mata Ortiz, a small village in the Mexican State of Chihuahua. Each piece is hand coiled using a method also employed by traditional Native American potters. Inspired by pottery shards left behind by prehistoric Casas Grandes peoples, Juan Quezada, the town's most famous artist, through painstaking trial and error was able revive this lost art. During the last thirty or so years, the design concepts have evolved to include amazing geometric patterns, fetishes, pre-Columbian and Mimbres designs. The complex designs painted with traditional brushes made of one to several human hairs, as well as their remarkably thin walled construction, make these pots a favorite of collectors. Many of their designs look like flowers when viewed from the top, as this one does, and look like a geometric pattern when viewed from the side. Signed by artist on bottom. Keywords: Native American, Indian; Ref: BD1175
