    Dimensions:
  • 4.75" Barrel
  • Artist Name:
  • Colt
  • Circa:
  • 1901
  • Notes:
  • The Protector Palm Pistol was first patented and built in France in 1882 by Jacques Turbiaux and sold as the "Turbiaux Le Protector" or the "Turbiaux Disc Pistol". Later in 1883 it was built in the USA as The Protector by Minneapolis Firearms Co.. Peter H. Finnegan of Austin, Illinois bought the patent in 1892 and founded the Chicago Fire Arms Co. to make and market the pistols. In anticipation of the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, he contracted the Ames Sword Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts to manufacture 15,000 pistols. Ames made 1,500 of the pistols by the deadline of the exhibition. Finnegan sued for damages and engaged in a lawsuit with Ames. The company countersued and settled with Finnegan, but, through the years, had amassed a large production run of 12,800 pistols. The company sold the inventory and abandoned the design by 1910.
  • Condition:
  • The overall condition rates as very good to fine. The original bluing on the barrel, frame and grip frame has turned to an even silver-grey patina with areas of stronger bluing in the cylinder flutes. The barrel bore is shiny with strong rifling and exhibits several areas of very light pin-prick pitting. The cylinder chambers are very fine with no pitting or corrosion. The grip panels show moderate wear with a small hairline crack on the underside of the left panel. There are two pressure indentations on the right panel next to the screw escutcheon. The hammer action does not hold on positions 2 and 3. Position 1 and 4 (full-cock) are solid and positive. There does not appear to be any visible replaced parts. This is a fine example of a period-correct Colt Single Action Army revolver. Any distractions are commensurate with the normal wear and use of a “working pistol”.
