Clara Sipprell Signed "Moment of Life" Photography Book. In 1966 Clara Sipprell authored and published her own book of photographs titled “Moment of Light”. The hardcover book includes 153 reproductions of photographs taken by Clara Sipprell. Published in 1966 it features photographs of many famous world leaders, politicians, scientists, authors and artists such as, Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, Grandma Moses, Constantine Stanislavsky, Lorado Taft, Max Weber, Emil Ludwig. Eleanor Roosevelt and more. Clara Sipprell (1885–1975) was a Canadian born photographer who lived most of her life in the United States. Best known for her portraits of many famous actors, artists, writers and scientists. Sipprell became involved in the activities of the Buffalo Camera Club, which, and even though membership was closed to women at the time, she was allowed to participate. In 1910 she exhibited her first photos at the Camera Club, one of which won second prize in the portrait competition. Later, in1913 she won six prizes at the show, more than any of the Club’s male members. Over the next forty years she would go on to photograph some of the worlds most famous artists, writers, dancers and other cultural icons of the time, including Alfred Stieglitz, Pearl S. Buck, Charles E. Burchfield, Fyodor Chaliapin, Ralph Adams Cram, W. E. B. Du Bois, Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, Granville Hicks, Malvina Hoffman, Langston Hughes, Robinson Jeffers, Isamu Noguchi, Maxfield Parrish and Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1937 Sipprell moved to Manchester, Vermont where she met Phyllis Fenner (1899–1982), a writer, librarian, and anthologist of children's books. This relationship continued through the final thirty-eight years of Sipprell's life. Clara Sipprell died in April 1975 at the age of eighty-nine. According to the letter included in this lot from Phyllis Fenner it is said that towards the end of her life Clara was partially blind and slipped into a coma on April 15th. She requested that her ashes be buried in a plot near an outcropping of rock in Manchester. Attached to the rock is a small bronze tablet which is engraved with her own name, along with the names of Jessica Beers and Phyllis Fenner. Clara became a prize-winning photographer putting on exhibits nationally, a real achievement for a woman of her day and over the course of her lifetime her work was shown in more than 100 photography exhibitions around the world. Throughout her seventy-year career Sipprell created photographs that typify Pictorialism: expressive rather than narrative or documentary , suggesting in her portraits the spiritual quality of the subject rather than a physical likeness. The book is signed and dated 1966 on the title page. Keywords: Collectible; Ref: BD2022
