Description:

Claes Thure Oldenburg (Born 1929) "Study for a Sculpture in the Form of an Inverted Q: Above and Below Ground" Color lithograph, soft-ground etching, and aquatint on Paper. Signed in pencil on lower right, numbered 39/100. Whimsical sculpture of pop culture objects, many of them large and out-of-doors, is the signature work of Swedish-born Claes Oldenburg who became one of America's leading Pop Artists. A onetime journalist and illustrator in Chicago, Oldenburg fell in with Pop— a vernacular approach to art that mocked the somber bravado of Abstract Expressionism—after moving to New York in 1956. He became friends with numerous artists including Jim Dine, Red Grooms and Allan Kaprow, who with his "Happenings" was especially influential on Oldenburg's interest in environmental art. His works can be found in institutions worldwide, including Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Musée national d'art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
