Description:

Civil War General Henry A. Wise Signed Letter of Promotion. Autographed letter from Virginia Governor Henry A. Wise concerning the promotion of Joseph Godlove to First Lieutenant in the 14th Regiment of the 18th Brigade and 3rd Division of Virginia Militia. The letter reads, " The Commonwealth of Virginia, To Joseph Godlove, Greeting: Know you, that from special trust and confidence reposed in your fidelity, courage and good conduct, our Governor, in pursuance of the authority vested in him by the Constitution of Laws of this Commonwealth, doth commission you a First Lieutenant in the 14th Regiment of the 18th Brigade and 3rd Division of the Virginia Militia, to tank as such from the 28th, day of September 1858. In testimony whereof, Ii have hereunto signed my name as Governor, and caused the Seal of the Commonwealth to be affixed, this 14th day of September1859. Henry A. Wise" On the back of the letter is a handwritten statement from the judge that presided over the swearing in of Joseph Godlove. Henry A. Wise was a lawyer, a member of the United States House of Representatives (1832–1844), U.S. minister to Brazil (1844–1847), governor of Virginia (1856–1860) during John Brown‘s raid on Harpers Ferry, and a brigadier general in the Confederate army during the American Civil War (1861–1865). Henry A. Wise began his political life with a duel. He shot and severely wounded his opponent for Congress. He served from 1833 to 1844, developing a reputation as a hot-headed, fiery orator. He is best known for being the governor during the trial of famous abolitionist John Brown. Because of his political prominence and secessionist reputation Wise was appointed Brigadier General-and later promoted to the rank of Major Genera in the Confederate Army, despite his complete lack of military experience. After the war Wise resumed his law career. He died on September 12, 1876, in Richmond. Keywords: Antique, Civil War, Milia; Ref: BD2022
