Lot 2177
Circa 1932, Brigadier General Robert L. Scott Jr. Personal Europe & Asia Motorcycle Tour Ephemera Collection & Autographed Books. Historically significant and comprehensive collection of autographed ephemera and memorabilia from WWII Brigadier General Robert L. Scott Jr., famed commander of the 23rd Fighter Group in China and author of the best selling memoir "God Is My Co-Pilot". This exceptional lot includes Scottâs personal copy of Europa Touring, the travel guide he used while motorcycling across Europe and Asia following his 1928 graduation from the U.S. Military Academy. This well-worn volume contains Scottâs original notes, letters, maps, tickets, and receipts from the early 1930s, chronicling his solo journey from France to Mount Ararat. Also includes signed photographs, rare aviation prints, personal travel materials, and multiple books, offering a rich and personal glimpse into the extraordinary life and career of one of Americaâs legendary fighter aces. Included in the lot is a cockpit photograph depicting Scott seated in his Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, the iconic aircraft flown by the Flying Tigers. Also featured are a signed headshot of Scott in uniform and a historic photo of him in conversation with Brigadier General Claire Chennault during the summer of 1942, as the American Volunteer Group transitioned into the 23rd Fighter Group. Seven books are included in this collection: two copies of Damned to Glory (one signed), a signed copy of The Day I Owned the Sky, two signed copies of God Is My Co-Pilot, and unsigned copies of Boring a Hole in the Sky and Runway to the Sun. Two limited edition aviation art prints from the 1982 Aviation Art Museum collection accompany the lot: âFlying Fortress 26th Mission Homeward Bound â Plate III,â signed by both artist Kenneth Fox and pilot Col. Robert K. Morgan, and âP-40E Warhawk (A.V.G.) Plate II,â signed by Fox and Gen. Scott. Both prints come with certificates of authenticity. Keywords: Ephemera, Collectible, Militaria; Ref: BD3204
- Circa: 1932
- Notes: General Scott was born in Macon, Georgia in 1908, Robert L. Scott Jr. graduated from West Point in 1932, earned his pilot wings in 1933, and quickly rose through the ranks of the Army Air Corps. Although initially assigned to flight instruction and support roles during WWII, Scott lobbied persistently for combat duty and was eventually sent to the China-Burma-India Theater. There, he flew over 388 combat missions, logged 925 flight hours, and downed 13 enemy aircraft though he maintained that his actual tally was 22, due to the lack of gun camera footage in China. His fearless service earned him two Silver Stars, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, and three Air Medals. In July 1942, at the request of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, Scott took command of the 23rd Fighter Group, the successor to Chennaultâs AVG Flying Tigers. He later returned to the U.S. to promote the war effort and authored "God Is My Co-Pilot," which was adapted into a 1945 Hollywood film. Post-war, Scott helped establish the Air Forceâs independence from the Army, commanded the first USAF jet fighter school, and served in high-level public affairs and operational posts both domestically and abroad. A lifelong adventurer and tireless champion of aviation history, Scott continued flying into his 80s and dedicated his final years to the development of the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, Georgia. His personal mission was to educate new generations about the sacrifices of WWII and to preserve the legacy of American air power.
