Description:

Charles Miner (Born 1947) Large Art Glass Pate-de-Verre "Face" Vase. Signed C V Miner 041005. Charles Miner began his career as a glass artist in 1974. The following year he purchased land in rural New Mexico that was part of an artist commune in the 1960s. There was a huge chicken coop on the property and it was quite an adventure for Charles to gut it and transform it into a glass studio. By 1990, the complex evolved into a hot glass and casting facility, a school with an apprentice program, and today it affords studio and gallery space for not only Charles but seven other glass artists as well. In 1990 he had the opportunity to refine his skills, studying under David Reekie and Clifford Rainey, at Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. Initially, he focused on glass blowing techniques with a strong basis in functionality. In the late 90s, Charles began casting sculptural pieces using the pate de verre method. It is his goal to create a "body of work that is visually pleasing on both the interior and exterior, but that still holds a certain utilitarian feeling." Charles creates pate de verre bowls, baskets and vases that have intricate detail in sculpted relief, but the pieces are still based on the tradition of functional vessels. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Corning Glass Museum, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the New Mexico Museum of Art, and the Tucson Museum of Art.
