Description:

Charles LaSalle (1894 - 1958) "Home, Sweet Home" Oil on Board. Signed and inscribed "To Bill O'Brien" on lower left. Charles Louis Lassell was born March 5, 1894, in the little town of Greenwood, Mass., near Boston. As a teenager, LaSalle worked his way through Boston's Fenway School of Illustration doing any number of odd jobs, from modeling for his instructors to working as nightwatchman at a railroad crossing. He hunted and trapped in winter and sold the skins to the Hudsons Bay Company. During his last year at Fenway he studied with Harvey T. Dunn, said to be one of the greatest illustration teachers this country has ever had. After graduation he worked with Boston's Snow Advertising Agency as a bull pen artist, using pencil and, later, charcoal. It didn't take him long to be established on his own. His first sale was an illustration for Boy's Life, which he signed with his family name of Lassell. A few years later, however, when he was an illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post, he adopted the spelling of LaSalle. People were pronouncing it that way and spelling it that way; he was a warm-hearted, accommodating person. The name of LaSalle appeared in Collier's, Red Book, McCall's, Leslie's Weekly, True, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, to name only a few. Some of his advertising accounts were Insurance Companies of North America, Ford, GM, GE.
