c 1845 Pedro Jose Aguirre Spanish Ornate Percussion Pistol. Single shot percussion pistol made by Pedro Jose Aguirre located in Eibar Spain. The pistol is fitted with a 6.75 inch smooth, two-stage, 17 mm cal. barrel, octagonal and round with small molded muzzle, with two engraved gold inlaid bands at the rear of the barrel, and elegant silver filled ornate script, "De Herraduras" on the left side of the barrel, "Por Pedro Aguirre" on the top of the barrel, and "En Eybar 1845" on the right side of the barrel. The lock-plate, sidelock, hammer, trigger guard, back-strap, and ram-rod pipe are beautifully engraved with great details. The walnut stock is nicely checkered and the fitting of barrel, sidelock, lock-plate, trigger guard, back-strap, etc. is nicely done. Lock with flat lock plate portraying a dog and marking 'En Eibar', border with outlines. Wooden, full stock with checkered grip, iron mounts, trigger guard marked 'En Eibar', butt-plated shaped as beak with long tang on the back and ring for the strap. Ramrod holder with floral carving. This is a truly one of a kind, extremely ornate, and rare 176 year old pistol that has really withstood the test of time. This is a extremely high quality made pistol, and it would have been an expensive and beautiful piece when it was new. The wood is in good condition with signs of shrinkage along the back strap, which is usual for firearms with wood of this age. The barrel shows very little pitting to the rear of the barrel. The bore is clear with light rusting. The nipple has visible damage from being fired, but is still open hole in the middle. Metal accents have a beautiful dark patina. Action functions properly.
