Description:

This antique Winchester was a Special Order Second Model 1873. It sports a 30” octagonal blued barrel with Winchester’s two-line address and a full-length blued magazine tube. The barrel has an elevator- adjustable buckhorn rear sight and a dovetailed blade front sight. It carries the “thumb-print” sliding dust cover and were chambered in the powerful .44-40 caliber cartridge and therefore, had no caliber markings on the barrel or on the external brass shell lifter. The color case-hardened receiver has steel side-plates. The external lever assembly, hammer and crescent butt-plate were color case-hardened as well. Caliber/ Gauge: .44-40 Cal.; Serial Number: 30545 Working Order: Firearm has not been tested; Background Check: Not Required Keywords: Firearms, Guns; Ref: BD1040

  • Circa: 1879
  • Notes: #40
  • Condition: Excellent overall with 50-60% original blue mixed with patina. There are minor nicks on some areas of the barrel flats. The barrel also carries the Winchester two-line address with all the lettering showing as crisp and readable. The magazine tube is starting to turn to an even brown patina. There are protected areas on the receiver, tangs, lever assembly and crescent butt-plate that show areas of the original case colors. This rifle is mechanically excellent. The bore is good with very visible rifling. The forearm and buttstock are in very good to excellent condition with some minor dings and light scratches that are appropriate for a rifle of this age. There are no cracks, chips or gouges on the wood stocks. On each side of the stock, next to the crescent butt-plate, are barely perceptible, stamped letters that read W A DAVIS. More than likely, it probably is the name of the original owner. This is a very nice example of a Special-Order antique Winchester ’73 with a longer-than-usual barrel. Probably for long-range use on the Western plains.
