Antique Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action .32 WCF (.32-20) Rifle, 3rd Model. This antique Winchester Model 1873 sports a 24” inch octagon barrel with a full-length magazine tube. Standard blade front sight coupled with an elevator-adjustable, buckhorn rear sight. Equipped with the standard 3rd Model sliding dustcover with the integral-to-the frame rail. The barrel has the standard two-line, roll-stamped, Winchester address. The caliber marking of .32 Cal can be found on the external portion of the brass shell-lifter on the underside of the receiver. The model number is located on the upper tang while the lower tang shows the serial number. All the external metal parts were polished and Nickel plated by Stembridge Gun Rentals of Hollywood, CA. The bottom of the receiver has a large “S” stamped on the bottom. (See Historical note below.) The wood stocks are made of straight-grained Walnut. Caliber/ Gauge: .32 WCF Serial Number: 303981B Working Order: Firearm has not been tested; Background Check: Not Required; Keywords: Firearms, Guns; Ref: BD1040
- Provenance: This Winchester came from Stembridge gun rentals in Hollywood, Ca. James Stembridge and Cecil B. DeMille founded this company in 1913 to teach actors proper gun handling. Later on, between the years 1916 and 1920, they recognized the need to supply Hollywood studios with a plethora of various types of rental guns for movie props. Although Stembridge is still in existence, the rental of guns ceased years ago. There is no way of telling which Hollywood actors utilized this rifle in the Western roles they played. Could it have been Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, or maybe even Tom Mix? We will never know for sure. Or maybe, we will, in our dreams of that bygone Hollywood era. Happy Trails pardner!
- Dimensions: 24" Barrel
- Circa: 1889
- Notes: The Model 1873 was one of the most successful Winchester rifles of its day, with Winchester marketing it as "The Gun That Won the West". Still an icon in the modern day, it was manufactured between 1873 and 1923. It was originally chambered for the .44-40 cartridge, which was the first centrefire cartridge and which became immensely popular. The 1873 was later produced in .38-40 and .32-20, all of which later became popular handgun cartridges of the day, allowing users to carry just one type of ammunition. The Model 1873 was produced in three variations: a 24-inch barrel rifle, a 20-inch barrel carbine, and a "musket"—which was aimed at military contracts and only made up less than 5% of production. (Musket was a term that, at the time, denoted a full-length military-style stock, not to be confused with a true smoothbore musket). The standard rifle-length version was most popular in the 19th century, although Winchester would make rifles to order in any configuration the customer wished, including longer barrels or baby carbines with barrels as short as 12 inches, octagonal-shaped barrels, color case hardened receivers and fancy engraving.
- Condition: All metal parts reflect various amounts of pin-prick pitting underneath the Nickel plating. The rifle bore is semi-shiny with visible rifling. The action is strong and solid. The wood stocks exhibit handling marks and scratches consistent with the age of this Winchester rifle and the roll it played in Hollywood movie making.
