Description:

Antique William H. Cary & Co New York .50 cal Percussion Belt Pistol. This antique ornate percussion black powder belt pistol is marked on the lockplate "WM H-Cary & Co New York". The brass pommel has an ornate lion's head. The top of the octagonal damascus barrel is marked "Warranted Fine Twist". The breech is finely engraved as well as the lockplate and brass accents. This pistol could be connected with the famous Cary Building in New York, that was built and named after William H. Cary, which is the name that is engraved in the lockplate. The Cary Building’s two cast-iron facades are among the earliest surviving in New York. In 1857 William H. Cary put up the biggest building on the block, 50 feet wide and reaching 200 feet back to Reade Street. Cary had established the dry-goods firm of Cary, Howard & Sanger in the 1830's and the Union Sketchbook of 1861, a business guide and directory, described his new store as ''the product of the taste and ingenuity of three continents . . . 1,500 different kinds of foreign and domestic fancy goods, comprising jewelry, perfumes, watches, cutlery, guns, musical instruments, combs, brushes.'' Due to the time period, and limited historical information related to William H. Cary we are unable to verify the provenance and whether this firearm was owned, sold, or made by the business associated with William H. Cary. However, the time period and location appear to align. Caliber/ Gauge: .50 cal.; Serial Number: NSN Working Order: Firearm has not been tested; Background Check: FFL Not Required; Keywords: Firearms, Guns; Ref: BD2024
