Lot 2100
Antique Engraved Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action .45-60 WCF Rifle w/ Cody Museum Letter. This antique Winchester Model 1876 “thumper” sports a 28” inch round barrel with a full-length magazine tube. The barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line Winchester address including King’s Improvement, patent dates and caliber marking. The front sight is the standard blade coupled with an adjustable ladder rear sight. The dust cover rides on a rail that is integral to the receiver. Model number is stamped on the upper tang and the serial number is located on the bottom tang. The non-factory engraving on the receiver consists of bordered floral and scroll with a Stag scene on the left side and a Bison on the right. Additional engraving can be found on the barrel behind the front sight, around the caliber marking near the breech and on the bottom of the brass shell lifter around the second caliber marking. The barrel, magazine tube, receiver, loading lever, butt-plate and all other metal parts are blued steel. The wood stocks are made of straight-grained Walnut. Caliber/ Gauge: .45-60 WCF Serial Number: 29564 Working Order: Firearm has not been tested; Background Check: Not Required; Keywords: Firearms, Guns The original bluing on all the metal has turned to a very pleasing, even, brown patina. Engraving patterns are reminiscent of those used by the Winchester master engravers of the time that this rifle was manufactured. As earlier mentioned, this engraving cannot be attributed to being factory original. The rifle bore is semi-shiny with minor areas of old oxidation and having very visible rifling. The Walnut stocks exhibit the normal dings, indentations and scratches associated with the age of this Winchester. Sometime, in the life of this rifle, the owner carved the word “Windy” on the bottom of the forearm. Instead of being an obvious distraction, it tends to add a degree of character and mystery to this rifles’ colorful past. As the new owner of this Winchester, you can develop your own story explaining the carving. The action is very strong and solid. The trigger pull is crisp and breaks cleanly. There does not appear to be any replaced parts. ; Ref: BD1040
- Provenance: This rifle will include a Cody Museum Factory Letter.
- Dimensions: 28" Barrel
- Circa: 1882
- Notes: The Winchester Model 1876, or Centennial Model, was a heavier-framed rifle than the Models 1866 and 1873, chambered for full-powered centerfire rifle cartridges suitable for big-game hunting, rather than the handgun-sized rimfire and centerfire rounds of its predecessors. While similar in design to the 1873, the 1876 was actually based on a prototype 1868 lever-action rifle that was never commercially produced by Winchester. Introduced to celebrate the American Centennial Exposition, the Model 1876 earned a reputation as a durable and powerful hunting rifle. Four versions were produced: a 22-inch barrel Carbine, a 26-inch barrel Express Rifle with a half-length magazine, a 28-inch barrel Sporting Rifle, and a 32-inch barrel Musket. Standard rifles had a blued finish while deluxe models were casehardened. Collectors identify a first model with no dust cover, a second model with a dust cover rail fastened by a screw, and a third model with an integral dust cover. Total production was 63,871 including 54 One of One Thousand Model 1876s and only seven of the One of One Hundred grade.
- Condition: The original bluing on all the metal has turned to a very pleasing, even, brown patina.
