Description:

1978 Battlestar Galactica Hero Colonial Viper - Zak (From Ep 1 "Saga of a Star World") 1:24 Scale. Created by famed artist at Apogee for the 1978 series and 1979 movie Battlestar Galactica. The parts were made by industry artist Mike Salzo using the Apogee photos of an original Hero model used in 1978. The amazing replica was built by famed artist R.L. Bleecker. The HERO Studio Model is the model that was used for the ‘close up’ effects shots. In other words,.. It was the star of the scene. For science fiction films with a moderate budget, these models made sense to have. As opposed to the PYRO model, the HERO model would not be featured many times in a film, and their detailing was usually very well done. Any true fan can spot the difference in the shape right away between a HERO and PYRO model. A few decades ago, a company emerged, called ICONS Replicas. They had cast a screen used Studio Model owned by Fuller French and produced a very nice replica. Only 100 of these were produced before ICONS shut its doors forever. Being that there was a high demand for these studio scale Vipers, a few Industry Artists copied the ICONs Replicas copy of the studio scale Colonial Viper. Now there was a copy of a copy, making that a second generation model. Many generational casts later, the studio model became hard to find in its correct size (having shrunk so much as it was cast from a cast, from a cast, and many later). Industry Artist Mike Salzo stepped up and hand made parts that are accurate to the original Colonial Viper studio model used in filming 1978’s Battlestar Galactica that were exquisite. The four HERO Studio Scale Colonial Vipers offered in this auction are made from those parts. Accurate to the originals, these four Studio Scale Vipers are unmatched in quality, with each very much being its own display. While the original studio filming models did not differentiate one from another, Kurt Kuhn (of Modelers Miniatures & Magic / Kuhn Global) asked Famed Artist R.L. Bleecker to bring these HERO Colonial Vipers to life, to be as if they were real, making each Colonial Warrior Pilot figure resemble the Actors that portrayed them. And so he did. Bleecker even painted the golden Galactica Pilot Emblem on each helmet as they were seen in the Series,.. not to mention the buckles on their Jackets. Every panel is accented beautifully, and every marking accounted for. The FOUR Hero Colonial Vipers have been praised by best model makers in the world as being the most accurate they have ever seen, with emphasis placed on their proper coloring. The Colonial Viper shown here is piloted by Zak, who is a new Colonial Warrior, Apollo’s younger brother, and Commander Adama’s eldest son. This model was replicated from the very first episode of Battlestar Galactica in 1978... Saga of a Star World. This two part Episode would go on to become the full length feature Film in 1979. In the beginning of the episode, Apollo and his younger brother, Zak Adama are out on a patrol that was meant to be flown by Apollo and Starbuck. Zak was an eager new Colonial Warrior, and being that they were in a Peace Envoy at the time, (which was a ruse for the Cylons to destroy the Colonial Fleet), Apollo agreed to take Zak on what he believed would be an uneventful Patrol. Upon discovering the Cylon Ambush awaiting the Colonial Fleet, and encountering much resistance fire, Apollo and Zak flew their Vipers as fast as they could go in order to reveal the ambush to the Colonial Fleet before it was too late. Zak ends up being hit in his top engine and stabilizer, (just like we have replicated in this studio scale Viper Replica). Not able to keep up, and possibly sacrificing himself, Zak tells Apollo to continue ahead to let the fleet know of the treachery. Zak died a Hero just as his Viper was ,...just short of the fleet. This replica is of that scene in the Series and Movie, when Zak has been hit, and is struggling to keep ahead of the Cylon threat, with Apollo looking over to Zak in his damaged Viper, doubting that he should leave him in order to notify the Fleet of the oncoming betrayal of Peace. It is truly a somewhat ‘missed’ amazing moment of the Series and Film that we thought would be represented well in these studio scale Replicas. This model replica is a “static” display, which means it is not lit, and shows like a studio model waiting to be filmed. It is fantastic. This Replica is a perfect piece to enhance a Battlestar Galactica collection. It displays very well with any of the Battlestar Galactica models in the Auction,..especially with Apollo’s Viper Replica, or in the Squadron. Keywords: Collectible; Ref: BD1831
