Description:

1966 Andy Warhol Aspen The Magazine in a Box Vol 1 No. 3 "The Pop Art Issue". This issue was designed by Andy Warhol and David Dalton. As with all the Aspen volumes this issue has many components including a flip-book of Warhol's film Kiss and Jack Smith's film Buzzards Over Bagdad; a flexidisc of the John Cale composition Loop by the Velvet Underground and Peter Walker's The White Wind, in an illustrated portfolio with essays by Lou Reed, Robert Shelton and Bob Chamberlain; the newspaper The Plastic Exploding Inevitable, with articles on LSD and marijuana; the booklet Season's Greetings, an illustrated essay on the Colorado wilderness house of Chuck and Lydia Rand; a survey promoting the fashion boutique Paraphernalia, titled Are you confused enough for Paraphernalia?; an advertising pamphlet for Vanguard Records; a broadsheet mimicking the New York Times, advertising Aspen; an advertising broadsheet for Guild Musical Instruments; a ten-trip ""ticket book""; an Aspen Magazine subscription form; and the portfolio of twelve cards reproducing paintings in the collection of John G. Powers. The cover depicts the FAB detergent box in Dayglo colors. ASPEN is considered a masterpiece of experimental art and institutional critique. Each issue was intended to be a time capsule, capturing the culture and events of the late 1960’s. The editor Phyllis Johnson, who used to spend her winters in Aspen, Colorado, understood that the great spirit of experimentation that defined the art scene in the sixties demanded a new form of presentation. This is how ASPEN. The Multimedia Magazine in a Box was born in 1965. It was the first ever three-dimensional magazine. It is a symbol of revolutionary multimedia publishing. Keywords: Mid-Century, Mid Century, Modern, Art, Ref: BD1179
