Lot 5000
1965 Harley Davidson Scat BTH 175cc Motorcycle. This ultra-cool 1965 Harley-Davidson Scat BTH looks amazing in a simple black paint scheme with white accents, and with its black solo saddle, it looks like a two-wheeled personification of Fonzie’s nephew Spike. That’s apropos, as for a young or new rider, a 175cc Harley-Davidson was about as cool a motorcycle as you could learn on in 1965; no Japanese or European lightweight even came close to its super cool street scrambler style. Despite Harley-Davidson owning Italian brand Aermacchi from 1960, as well as its production of Sprints and other small bikes, the Milwaukee Motor Co. still loved the simplicity of its Hummer engine as the basis for light and simple two-stroke bikes. By 1961, the original 125cc engine had been enlarged to 165cc, and finally, with the Pacer roadster and the Scat street scrambler, Harley-Davidson built a 175cc version of the engine. Introduced in 1962, the Scat used an interesting mix of styling cues with the small “sportsterish” tank (in ads called the “family resemblance”), bobbed big-bike rear fender adapted to the smaller machine, high front fender and high-level exhaust. In 1963, Harley-Davidson introduced the Pacer with a pressed-steel, L-shaped, lever swingarm using shocks mounted low beneath the engine, and the Scat gained the Pacer frame that year. The styling looked a bit like a custom bike, which gave it an extra cool cache. While they are rare today, Harley-Davidson built nearly 32,000 small two-stroke singles since 1947 and the original Hummer. These small singles are unsung heroes, as tens of thousands of riders got their start on them. This black and white 1965 BTH Scat is one of 1,250 produced that year, and it’s a terrific little machine with a uniquely American style. 1965 Miles: 000004 VIN: 65BTH1279 Keywords: Automobile/Vehicles; Ref: BD2022
