Lot 5016
1965 Harley Davidson Pacer BT 175cc Motorcycle. The Pacer was the street-styled sibling of the Scat street scrambler, and both models were an evolution of the original Hummer model of 1947. The Hummer was based on the 1930s DKW RT125, a simple piston-port, single-cylinder, two-stroke machine with a 3-speed gearbox in a unit-construction crankcase. DKW was once the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, and it specialized in two-strokes for road and racing. The DKW/Hummer engine was very simple and reliable, and it came with good performance. The gift of the design to Harley-Davidson was part of a war reparations package. While the Hummer was originally a 125cc machine, Harley-Davidson had enlarged the engine to 175cc by 1962 with the Scat and Pacer models, using a 6.6:1 compression ratio for 10 HP and an approximate 60 MPH top speed. The Pacer weighed only 216 pounds, and it was easy to start, making it a very easy machine to ride. The original Hummer was modeled as a miniature Sportster, and the Pacer followed suit, but with a new, extra-light frame using a pressed-steel, L-shaped, lever swingarm with underslung/invisible shocks beneath the engine. The backbone and seat/fender mount area of the frame was pressed steel, while the front downtube was steel tubing. The Pacer’s mix of styling cues included a miniaturized Sportster gas tank that the factory called a “family resemblance” in catalogs, a pair of Sportster-style fenders and a low-level exhaust with a black muffler. With its solo saddle and black paint with white accents, this Pacer BT certainly evokes the best of the Sportster era on a miniature scale. 1965 Miles: 9516 VIN: 65BT1587 Keywords: Automobile/Vehicles; Ref: BD2022
