1811 Pocket Constitution w Civil War Leaders Signatures. RARE 1811 book, "The Constitutions of the United States, According to the Latest Amendments, To Which Are Prefixed, The Declaration of Independence And The Federal Constitution with Amendments also the Farewell Address of George Washington, Esq." Published by GETTYSBURG: ROBERT HARPER, GETTYSBURG in 1811. Features signatures from two Civil War military leaders General James Birdseye McPherson (November 14, 1828 – July 22, 1864) and Colonel James Barnett (June 21, 1821-June 13, 1911). The book was originally owned and inscribed by General James McPherson and later purchased and signed by James Barnett. Both men were from Cuyahoga County, Ohio and served in the army during the Civil War. In 1879 a committee was formed to build a monument to commemorate the Union Soldiers and Sailors of Cuyahoga County. James Barnett sat on this committee with 11 other members. The monument features a series of medallions which depict notable military figures from throughout the Civil War who were from Cuyahoga County and died as a result of their service, one of which is General James McPherson. This book is signed/inscribed by both James McPherson and James Barnett. It is believed that Mr. Barnett may have purchased this book due to the significance of the signatures by James McPherson who was one of the individuals depicted on the north wall of the monument. The first page reads "James Mc Phersons Book" and below that reads " Sold to James.... " the back pages are inscribed " The property of James B. June 1st, 1887" and "James McPhersons Book". The next page on back reads "James McPhersons, James Barnett'. The inside back cover is a quote from William Cowper written in McPhersons handwriting that reads "God made bees, and bees made honey, God made man, and man made money, Pride made the devil, and the devil made sin; So God made a cole-pit to put the devil in.” James Birdseye McPherson was a Major General in the Union Army during the American Civil War, he was killed at the Battle of Atlanta, the second highest ranking Union officer killed during the war. James Barnett was a businessman, politician, soldier, and philanthropist. In 1839, Barnett joined the CLEVELAND GRAYS, fighting as colonel of the CLEVELAND LIGHT ARTILLERY in the CIVIL WAR. Barnett was promoted to general and chief of artillery. In 1856 Barnett helped organize the Republican party in Cleveland. Keywords: Antique, Collectible; Ref: BD2022
