Lot 2042
1792 Dated Massachusetts Provincial Troop Muster Order. Believed to have been issued under the Militia Act of 1792 in response to rising tensions on the American Frontier. Printed militia muster order dated April 12, 1792, issued to Mr. Timothy Heartshorn of Reading, Massachusetts, directing him to appear at Col. Nathan Parkerâs house on the third of May at 1 oâclock P.M., fully equipped for service in the Commonwealth militia. This order was issued shortly before or immediately following the enactment of the Militia Act of 1792 which was a foundational federal law passed by Congress on May 8, 1792 mandating that all able-bodied white male citizens between the ages of 18 and 45 enroll in local militia units and furnish their own arms and accoutrements. The printed form, filled in and signed with period ink, calls for a âgood Fire Arm with a Steel or Iron Ramrod, and a Spring to retain the same, a Worm, Priming Wire, and Brush, a Bayonet fitted to your Fire Arm, and Scabbard and Belt for the same, a Cartridge Box, 15 Cartridges at least 6 Flints, one Pound of Powder, 40 Leaden Balls, "suitable for your firearm, a Haversack, Blanket, and Canteen." Signed at the bottom by Captain Benjamin Pratt, who served as a captain during the revolutionary war. These requirements mirror the minimum requirements established by the Militia Act.. This document falls within the timeframe during the post-Revolutionary period. With tensions rising on the American frontier, the newly formed United States faced ongoing conflict during the Northwest Indian War (also known as Little Turtleâs War, 1785â1795), as Native American confederacies resisted U.S. expansion into the Northwest Territory. The militia system, reinforced by the 1792 legislation, was a central element of federal and state efforts to suppress these uprisings and protect settlers in contested regions. Signed at the bottom by Captain Benjamin Pratt, who served as a captain during the revolutionary war. Col Nathan Parker was born on 12 March 1748 and died on 30 July 1813, in Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts. He was part of Reading, Massachusetts militia and minutemen before he was promoted to Colonel. Also included in this lot is a rare hand-decorated paper token, found with the document. This circular scalloped item, features a central arrangement of musical instruments, a lyre or violin, horns, and trumpets, surrounded by blue floral vines and a music scroll. It likely served as a commemorative or sentimental keepsake tied to Readingâs militia history. The image itself reflects the vital role of music corps in militia musters. Keywords: Militaria, Collectible; Ref: BD1111
- Provenance: This document notably names Col. Nathan Parker as the designated officer for muster assembly. Parker also appears in Lilley Eatonâs 1874 Genealogical History of the Town of Reading, Mass., which recounts the actions of Reading's militia on April 19, 1775âthe day of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. On pages 702â703, Eaton records that Parker, along with fellow patriots Timothy Wakefield, Joseph Bancroft, and Jonathan Weston, took a direct route to Lexington, where they engaged the retreating British forces. This establishes Col. Parker as a Revolutionary War veteran and local military leader, reinforcing the documentâs connection to the legacy of Americaâs earliest fight for independence. Signed by Benjamin Pratt, Clerk, this piece offers a rare and compelling snapshot of early federal defense implementation at the community level. It is a scarce artifact of post-Revolutionary military organization, deeply rooted in the patriot traditions of Massachusetts militia history.
