Description:

1689 William and Mary Silver Half Crown. This is a 1689 William and Mary half crown depicting the first reverse design. William and Mary were first cousins and married in 1677, when William was 27 and Mary was just 15. Mary's father, King James II, had converted to Catholicism. When his wife gave birth to a son, it meant Mary was no longer next in line for the throne and Protestants feared a Catholic King. They ruled side by side until Mary's death from smallpox in 1694. Obverse Conjoined busts of King William III, and Queen Mary II facing right. First busts type.
